Earlier today I was reading passages in my Bible from the book of Leviticus and for the first time in a long time, I responded aloud, “that is disgusting and you don’t have to worry about me eating those things Lord. Not now, never, not ever!”
Leviticus 11:20-23 says this, “All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you. There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat; those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest.”
I guess flying cockroaches are out of the question too. 🙂 just kidding.
My footnote says that “although insects have six legs, perhaps people back then did not count as ordinary legs the two large hind legs used for jumping.”
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t have worried about whether or not I got to eat these as part of my daily food intake. Can you imagine this being a consideration today? Grasshoppers are gross and their spit is disgusting. I’m sure someone on this planet they are a delicacy, but I’ve never seen them on a delicatessen menu.
There are other animals in this chapter that after you read about them and think about society today and what we eat here in America, the tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. You wont find very many fried grasshoppers, fried rat, lizard or gecko on menus in America. I can say that for me anyway considering I don’t go much outside my comfort foods.
I found this interesting today from reading and thought I would pass it along. I am still amazed at the little treasures of information the Bible holds in wait for us.
Father when I think about the Bible I am reminded that it is like reading your letters to us. There is something for everyone in the Bible. May we take the time to read the number one best seller for the last few thousand years so that when we stand before you in Heaven and you ask us if we read your book, we can respond with a positive answer. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
In His Service
