The Fruit Wars – The Sequel

I am already laughing at the title of this one because when I think of sequels, they usually are not as good as the original movie. I know there have been a few exceptions, but still.

Back to the fruit wars shall we: The fruit brings to mind something important for us to remember. All fruit comes from a seed. The seed is planted or dropped to the ground, sprouts, grows into a beautiful tree, and in season produces much fruit. Maybe you have an orange tree in your yard. Perhaps you have a lemon tree. By the way, lemons hurt worse when you are hit because of the tips on them. I am not trying to say I know from experience – well, maybe a tad bit.

My point is the fruit did not just appear. It went through a process. It started as a seed and made the long journey out to the end of the branch. Through the journey, it experienced many seasons. It went through the really hot summers, and it battled the freezing temperatures. It became home for many of God’s animals like birds, squirrels, and butterflies. And in a lot of cases, it endured pruning. Pruning fruit trees help promote growth. Look at what Jesus said in John 15: 1-2:
“15:1 “I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. 15:2 He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me. He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit. ”

My footnote says the grapevine was a symbol of a single vine that supports many branches and bears many grapes.

Christ is the vine, and God is the gardener who cares for the branches to make them fruitful. The branches are all those who claim to be followers of Christ. I will talk about the difference between fruitful branches and non-bearing branches in the next devotional.

Prayer time:
Father, thank you for being the gardener in our lives. I pray Lord we allow the pruning to take place in us. I pray we are all trying to bear fruit, fruit that will last. Help everyone to have a blessed day. That is my prayer for them. May you be their gardener today and every day. God to you be all the glory for these daily devotionals. In Christ Jesus I pray, Amen.

Standing on His Promises,

Jeanette Duby
