Why Do People Lie So Easily?

Truth be told…

Everywhere we turn today, we see, hear, and read where someone is lying and being dishonest. We don’t know who to believe anymore, and it’s like spilling sour milk on ourselves, and the stink is hard to get away from. Truth! Where are you?

Allow me to share a personal story with you.

When I was married several years ago, my husband lied. He lied to me all the time. And to make matters worse, he stunk at it.

One day I finally said to him, “If you’re going to lie to me, you need to do a better job because you are a horrible liar!”

Now, of course, I wasn’t that graceful about it, and I used some words I’m not very proud of today, but you get the drift.

Today, I can look back at those days and laugh because I was good at telling the difference. That’s something to be proud of from my failed marriage, huh?

What does scripture say?

Look at what Proverbs 12:19 says:

“The one who tells the truth will endure forever, but the one who lies will last only for a moment. “

Truth lasts

It is said that truth is always timely and applies today, tomorrow, and in the future. Truth is what this world could use a lot more of, especially among each other, in the media, and across all the social media websites we scroll every day.

Can you name one thing that has withstood the test of time over and over again?

My answer? The Bible!

The Bible is full of God’s character, which is changeless. Because God’s Word is true, you can trust what it says.

As I scan the world landscape today and read my Bible, I see what the Lord was trying to tell us in his Word. I know the way the world is going.

The Bible says there will be lawlessness in the last days – there is. I can see the hatred, violence, greed, anger, malice, deceit, murder, idolatry, immorality, and covetousness, just as the Bible describes.

In the book of Matthew, I read about the birth pains Christ referenced. I can see the birth pains happening today.

I see and hear the scoffers we are told about in 2 Peter.

Truth be told…

The world says what we see is not what we see with our own eyes. Clearly, there are two sides. Those who believe in what they see, and those who believe in what they see. How can both be right?

The Lord asks me to walk by faith, not by sight. God asks me to trust in him and not put my trust in man. Psalm 118:8 says, “It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”

Lying for many today has become second nature, and they are unable to recognize the truth. After a while, lies become so real, that like my ex, they have to defend them with more lies.

One thing I believe and the Bible tells me is that everything hidden will be uncovered eventually. This has proven to be true again and again. It might not happen in your lifetime, but know this – nothing gets past Almighty God – nothing.

Put your trust in a loving God who has proven He has staying power and is truthful. Read the best-selling book of all time, the Bible, and find out the truth and what is to come.

Let’s pray

Father, thank you for your timeless truth, which leads and guides us daily. Please help us to get into the Word to find out what the truth is for our lives. Please help us to be truthful too. Lying hurts people, and it hurts you. God, I’m so thankful you love us and forgive us for our sins. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
