We are finishing up the characteristics of Bible prophecy. Today we look at a warning from the book of Revelation. It involves humanity, you, and me.
Our study passage comes from Revelation 22:18-19.
“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.”
The warning here specifically relates to the book of Revelation. Humanity is not to add to or take away from the prophecy found in Revelation. Think about this for a moment. All Scripture is God-breathed, so the warning comes from God himself. We are to pay attention.
My commentary says, “John warned the recipients of the book not to add to what God had said. While such a warning could well pertain to Scripture as a whole, here, it refers more narrowly to the book of Revelation.
Two severe penalties were attached to the disobedience in this matter. First, God would send the very plagues of the book itself against any violator. False prophets would not be delivered from the great tribulation but would instead be left to experience its full fury.
Second, such persons would miss the blessings of salvation associated with the tree of life.”
Those are some serious penalties for humanity, yet there have been and will continue to be some who do what these Scriptures are warning against.
Next time we’re together, we will look at some true and false indicators from Scripture regarding prophecy. I can’t wait! I hope to see you next time.
Blessings!
