Declared The Son Of God – Prophecy

Hello and welcome. If you are joining us for the first time, I am glad you stopped by. If you are back again, thank you! Today, we are continuing on our trek through biblical prophecies about the Messiah. First, the Messiah would be declared the Son of God. Our search takes us to Scripture in both the Old and New Testament books.

Prophetic Scripture

Psalm 2:7, I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.”

Fulfilled

Matthew 3:17,  and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Notes

Hundreds of years before Christ was born, the psalmist records a prophetic message from the Lord. This decree is an eternal decree by God the Father.

If we back up a few verses, we see the kings of the earth and rulers band together against the Lord. Foolishness is what that is for them to think they can go against God and his anointed.

Matthew narrative

In the Matthew narrative, Jesus had just been baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. As he rose out of the water, heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove. And behold, a voice from heaven makes a declaration.

The voice authenticated  Jesus’ Messianic sonship. God spoke the same words as Psalm 2:7, calling him Son. These words from the Father must have encouraged Jesus at the start of his earthly ministry. Jesus had not started his earthly ministry before his baptism. Thus, when the Holy Spirit descended like a dove onto Jesus, he equipped him for his work.

Jesus Christ was declared the Son of God by God himself.

Last side note

In my study of Matthew 4, I came across something interesting to note. In verse 3, we read that Satan, the tempter, is tempting Jesus. So verse 3 says,  “And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Satan knows Jesus is the Son of God. He isn’t casting doubt on Jesus’ divine sonship but is tempting him to use his supernatural powers as the Son of God for his own ends. Even Satan knows who Jesus is. And let me add this final thought – he also knows who wins in the end, and it isn’t him. Satan does not win in the end.

Satan is running ramped in this country and around the world because he knows his time is short. So we need to draw close to the Lord and hide in the shadow of his wings. Jesus is the eternal King who will rule and reign forever.

Stay faithful, friend. Stay alert and lookup. Watch for the Lord and as you wait, share your faith with others.

Blessings to you and your family.
