The Golden Rule – Matthew 7:12 – Today’s Bible Study Short and daily devotional
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. “Matthew 7:12
This is one of the most famous sayings, but did you know that what we coined “The Golden Rule” came straight out of the Bible?
Yes. Jesus himself is the one who taught this principle. It is a command, an action we are to take in response to how God has loved us.
The guideline is to treat others the way we wish to be treated. God is gracious and kind to us, so we should be gracious and kind to others.
My footnote says, “This is commonly known as “The Golden Rule.” In many religions, it is stated negatively: “Don’t do to others what you don’t want to be done to you. “By stating it positively, Jesus made it more significant. It is not very hard to refrain from harming others; it is much more difficult to take the initiative and do something good for them.”
Christ came to teach us not only what we are to know and believe, but what we are to do, not only toward God but toward people, not only toward those of our party and persuasion but toward all people in general, all with whom we have to do.
Think of a kind and merciful action you can take today and follow “The Golden Rule.”
