Verse Of The Day – Sexual Love In The Beginning

Where did sexual love come from? It’s a question many have asked. I thought it would be a good idea to look at sexual love from the beginning, from the Book of Genesis. Many people are unaware of the origin.

Our verse of the day comes from Genesis 1:27-28.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it,”

Let’s dig in.

God created us in his own image. This includes such characteristics as holiness and righteousness.

Man was different than all the other creatures God had made.

Notice that we see the word “created” three times to describe the central theme for day six of the creation story.

Don’t miss this – He blessed them and gave them instructions. The blessing is something that should not be overlooked.

What was the blessing?

Flourish. Multiply. Fill the earth with their kind and be stewards of his creatures.

Like the earlier passages regarding God’s creatures, the Lord is fundamentally concerned with the expansion of life. The man and woman are to go forth and multiply.

The Logos commentary says, “Thus already the fulfillment of the blessing is tied to man’s “seed” and the notion of “life” – two themes that will later dominate the narratives of the Book of Genesis. The imperatives “Be fruitful,” “increase,” and “fill” are not to be understood as commands in this verse since the introductory statement identifies them as a “blessing.”

What we need to remember is God had a purpose in mind for mankind.

God created the sexes (male and female) for:

  • Union – Genesis 2:23-25
  • Helpfulness- Genesis 2:18
  • Procreation – Genesis 4:1
  • Sexual needs – Proverbs 5:17-19

Sexual love

  • Good and holy – Genesis 1:27-28; 2:24-25
  • Procreation – Genesis 4:1
  • In marriage only – Proverbs 5:15-20
  • Expression of love –  Song of Solomon 1:12-15; 3:1-5
  • Mutual Responsibility – 1 Corinthians 7:3-5

We will spend some time in future posts looking at the above passages to better understand what God intended with his creation.

Blessings!
