Apostasy – What is It? Part 2 – Counterfeits

Apostasy is alive and well in America. Walk down the street, and ask anyone you pass if they believe in God, and you will hear one of three answers: Yes, No, I used to. Why are we seeing people walk away from the faith? I believe counterfeits play a role.

Over the past few years, notable Christian band members have denounced their faith. Apparently, God made them very unhappy, and they couldn’t find themselves when they followed Christ. As they put it, they are finally happy and have found themselves. They feel a sense of relief.

It’s a sad commentary, but a genuine one in the 21st century. For someone to go years serving the Lord and leading others in worship to the Lord, to one day walk away from the Lord, makes you wonder if they really believed in the first place.

In part 1 of this topic, we started to look at Satan’s devices to drag believers away.

We looked at Scripture that described counterfeit gods, counterfeit Jesus(es), counterfeit Christs, counterfeit spirits, and counterfeit apostles.

Let’s finish looking at the rest of the devices Satan uses for Apostasy.

Counterfeit prophets – 2 Peter 2:1, “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.”

Counterfeit ministers – 2 Corinthians 11:15, “So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.”

Counterfeit gospels – Galatians 1:6-9, I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.”

Counterfeit miracles – 2 Thessalonians 2:9,  The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,”

Revelation 16:13, And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.” (No wonder I dislike frogs so much.)

Counterfeit worship – John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Interesting quote – author unknown

“Astrologers, fortune tellers, psychics, and witches have been predicting a new age of peace and prosperity for several years, but Bible signs indicate the world is on the brink of the Tribulation Period and that an economic collapse will accompany it.”

Mike Gendron offers this commentary on apostasy.

“Where will apostates come from?

The Church.

“Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.” (Acts 20:29)

“What will apostates look like?

Servants of righteousness

(2 Corinthians 11:15) See above for this Scripture.

“Where will apostates fall away “to?”

Not to atheism but a false Christianity. (Matthew 7)

Here’s the bottom line, folks. Apostasy, rebellion, and unbelief do not make God happy, and in due time he will deal with them.

In a world going south quickly, rebellion against God is the wrong path to walk down.

Final thought

Maybe you’re reading this, and you aren’t sure where you stand with the Lord. Would you please pray and ask him to show you? Pour your heart out to the Lord. He is faithful, and he will show you and respond.

Got a mustard seed size faith? No problem. The Lord is the best gardener. Please take it to him today. Don’t delay.

Blessings!
