Human Beings are the Common Denominator
I am not a very intelligent person. You won’t see me on the cover of a significant magazine or headline in a newspaper. Nothing I do will ever gain that kind of notoriety, and I am okay with it. Besides, I am happy being the size of a speck when my Heavenly Father looks down from heaven and sees me.
Given all that, what occurs to me in my little mind about guns, mental illness and evil are this:
When I look at all the horrific mass killings that have taken place, one common denominator is present in every single one throughout all human history – a human being.
A human being first killed another human being, his brother in a field over 4000 plus years ago.
Humans beings hung other human beings on wooden stakes, crosses, and trees, letting them hang there to their deaths.
Humans beings burned other human beings by fire, both children and adults.
Human beings used ropes to kill other human beings.
Human beings used knives to stab other human beings on horseback and on foot.
Human beings used guillotines to chop off other human beings’ heads.
Human beings used gas chambers to murder millions of human beings.
Human beings used poison to kill thousands of human beings.
Human beings used guns to kill other human beings.
Human beings used airplanes to kills thousands of human beings.
Human beings used motorized vehicles to kill human beings.
Human beings used tainted drugs to kill human beings.
Human beings decapitated blindfolded human beings with knives.
And I am sure there are other examples I haven’t thought of or am aware of.
What’s the common denominator?
In my little mind, human beings were the ones who used lifeless objects to kill, murder, and maim other human beings.
For me, I believe it’s a heart problem. As long as there are folks who do not believe real evil exists in the human heart, there will always be murder and killing of human beings by human beings.
Make all the laws you want, but they won’t stop the human heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?”
Jealousy, envy, rage, bitterness, slander, hatred, desire to be right, and the like have taken over many a human heart and set up residence. Many have pushed away love, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, and self-control.
Evil deceived the first woman
Evil has never stopped deceiving people. It says there is nothing wrong with the human heart. Evil says it is good and good is evil. Evil blames others. Evil doesn’t want to look at what’s on the inside – what’s in the heart.
Billy Graham died a few years back amid the evil, hatred, and debating. How it must have saddened him in his last days to see all the evil and hatred among humanity.
Billy Graham was about love, and he spent his whole life preaching on love, the love of one greater than he – Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 10:1, “Love is patient; love is kind. It does not envy; it does not boast; it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self-seeking; it is not easily angered; it keeps no records of wrong. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”
Despite all that is happening in this world today, I choose to rest in what I believe is the truth – that I need Jesus Christ more and more every day more than I need all this hatred or a need to be right. Jesus gives me peace, hope, and the love I so desperately want and need each day.
Today, do not harden your heart but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
The human heart is broken in so many people. Tend to the human heart and seek the Lord while he may be found, and I believe you will repair a lot of what is happening in this world today.
