Matthew 24:4-5, “4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.”
Tell us when Lord. When will these things be? You have our attention. We’re ready to listen.”
Don’t be led astray. Wait. What?
Jesus starts answering their questions with a statement. He gives them what is considered to be one of the most important pieces of advice. Don’t be led astray.
My Logos commentary says, “One of the greatest temptations in times of difficulty is to follow blindly any self-proclaimed savior who promises to help. It is the temptation to rest confidence in false Christs.
Those who “come in my name” may refer to those who come as Jesus’ representatives, but we must assume the claim goes farther because of the words that follow in this chapter. They claim to be the Messiah, Christ himself. They come “in his name,” as if they were he.
Would-be deliverers have come in every age, not least the first century.”
Let’s think back to what Jesus said in verses 1 and 2.
Remember what he said to the disciples about the temple? As they admired the beauty and architecture of the temple and its furnishings, Jesus told them that the temple would be destroyed. Not one stone would remain on another.
I can’t help but think of the chaos that would bring to the people living in and around the temple.
If you are watching the news worldwide today, you get a sense of chaos and upheaval, natural disasters, pain and suffering, violence, destruction, lawlessness, and death. Some days it’s more than we can handle.
Do not be led astray by all the lofty promises and empty hype of false teachers and deceptive people in power. Please keep your eyes on Jesus Christ, the author and perfector of our faith. Keep looking up and seeking the Lord.
God alone knows when the end will come. He alone knows everything, no matter how much is hidden. I take great comfort in knowing that no matter how much humanity thinks they are hiding their actions, they will never be hidden from Almighty God!
